I recently had the pleasure of photographing the Crossfit Open workouts at my gym, Breaking Point Fitness. I discovered BPF pretty soon after moving from Connecticut to Philly, and I'm super happy I found such a fun and welcoming group of athletes and coaches. For those that don't know, the Crossfit Open workouts are a series of five workouts over five weeks, and the first stage of qualifying for the Crossfit Games, a worldwide competition to find the "Fittest on Earth."
I've done Crossfit for a few years, and it's been the most rewarding and effective exercise program I've participated in. This year I had the opportunity to photograph some of my fellow athletes and coaches during the Open workouts. I quickly found out that it's very different than photographing a wedding, but not without its similarities as well. Between all the barbells, pullup bars, and sweat, you'll find people pushing themselves both physically and mentally, encouragement, community, and a whole lot of high-fives. And even a few dinosaurs and doughnuts!
If you're curious about starting Crossfit and you're in Philly, definitely check out Breaking Point Fitness/Crossfit Ridge Ave. And If you're in New Haven or Haddam, Connecticut I highly recommend Crossfit New Haven, and Crossfit Ironworks, respectively. I worked out at each before moving to PA, and can't say enough good things about all three gyms! If you’re curious about CrossFit in general, there’s a great beginner’s guide at Hobby Help - very comprehensive and easy to understand!
Doing some prep work before the workout starts
Kevin getting in some warmup lunges before 17.2
Leah hamming it up for the camera while doing her lunges
Lindsay making muscle ups look like a walk in the park.
Some of the coaches, showing off their strength
Did I mention we had dinosaurs too? One of the teams "No Rep-Tars" had some of the best costumes!
Thrusters and double unders, everyone's favorites :)

Jeremy showing his pain-face. Thrusters'll do that...
Celebratory doughnut cake for team "Doughnut Lovers"
The encouragement of the Crossfit community
I also photographed some of the regular non-open workouts. Sometimes they're easier, sometimes they're definitely tougher!
Owner and head coach, Jim, showing us proper form...I believe for a close-grip bench press.
Some fun portraits of some strong women - Dr. Rachel, owner and nutritionist (center), coach Meg (left), and coach Jess (right).
